Sylvanas was originally a High Elf and the Ranger-General of Silvermoon, a position of great prestige and leadership. However, during the events of Warcraft III, she fell in battle against the Death Knight Arthas Menethil, who later became the Lich King. Instead of finding peace in death, Sylvanas had her soul torn from her body and was transformed into a banshee, under the control of the Lich King.
